Hot Yoga is a style of yoga that was developed in Canada by Bikram Choudhury. The practice consists of 26 postures and two breathing exercises, each done twice. He calls his style of yoga the “Bikram yoga system” and has trademarked the name Bikram Yoga.

 Choudhury says that there are more than 600,000 practitioners worldwide. However, a survey conducted by Yoga Journal found that only about 14,800 Americans practice Bikram Yoga on a regular basis. 

There are more than 4,100 bikram studios throughout America that offer this type of yoga.

Bikram describes his sequence of postures as “dynamic, heated vinyasa [flow] yoga done to music” and guarantees results if practiced correctly for 90 days consecutively. 

He also adds that anyone can do his style of yoga, even those with physical limitations.

1) Schedule your classes at least 1 week in advance. This allows you to schedule around other commitments and gives you time to prepare.

2) Tell a friend about your commitment! This will not only hold you accountable but knowing someone is waiting for you at the yoga studio will help motivate you.

3) Pack a towel and water bottle. You don’t want to have to carry your stuff around with you throughout the class. If it’s a hot yoga day, make sure the water isn’t going to spill if you leave it on the floor while doing poses or put it away after drinking from it.

4) Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. Let’s face it, and they will be wet after sweating in class, so bring an extra set of dry clothes as well!

8) Allow time after class to cool down and drink a cold beverage! The room will be warmer than usual for a little while after you leave the studio, so keeping yourself hydrated is essential because you don’t want your core temperature to stay elevated for too long.

9) Eat a healthy meal before going to the studio, so your digestion system isn’t too taxed during class. 

I find that eating within an hour of practicing also helps me focus better in class!

10) Make sure you have been practicing yoga at home before taking studios classes! There is nothing worse than being expected to do something in class that you aren’t yet flexible enough to accomplish. 

This is the quickest way to discourage yourself from continuing your practice.

Why Bikram Yoga Is Bad For You?

A Bikram yoga class is typically done in a room heated to around 105°F or 40°C.
